Is the PNG output truly lossless?
Yes. The decoded pixels are written to a PNG container without any recompression loss, and the alpha channel is kept. The output is pixel-identical to the original JPEG XL content.
Does the conversion keep transparency?
Yes. JPEG XL images with an alpha channel decode to PNG with that transparency intact. If your .jxl has no alpha, the PNG simply has none.
My PNG is bigger than the .jxl — is that normal?
Yes, and it's expected. JPEG XL compresses far better than PNG, and PNG is a heavy, lossless container. You are trading file size for universal compatibility and easy re-editing — that's the point of this conversion.
Do browsers support JXL yet?
Safari has rendered .jxl still images since version 17 (2023), and Firefox 157 (September 2026) enables it by default. Chrome has merged a JPEG XL decoder, but default-on support is not final in 2026. Outside browsers — editors, social platforms, operating systems — support remains patchy, which is exactly why conversion tools exist.
