Convert AVIF to WebP

Have an .avif image but need WebP — because a platform, CMS or older tool accepts WebP but not AVIF? This tool decodes your AVIF locally (via a WebAssembly AVIF decoder) and re-encodes it as WebP using your browser's native canvas encoder. Transparency is carried over, and a quality slider (default 80%) lets you balance size against fidelity. Everything runs in your tab: no uploads, no server, no watermarks, no usage limits, and it works offline once the codec loads. Honest notes: AVIF decoding here is done by WebAssembly (not every browser decodes AVIF natively on its own), and WebP export relies on your browser's canvas encoder — Chrome and Firefox support it, while Safari (even current versions) does not export WebP from canvas. If your browser can't, this tool detects it and points you to AVIF to PNG or AVIF to JPG rather than silently giving you a mislabelled file. Animated AVIF is exported as its first frame. Converting can't undo lossy compression already baked into the source.

Frequently asked questions

Are my AVIF files uploaded?

No. AVIF decoding (as WebAssembly) and WebP encoding both run inside your browser tab. Nothing leaves your device, and it works offline once loaded.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. WebP supports alpha, so any transparency in the AVIF carries through to the WebP output.

What about animated AVIF?

Animated AVIF is exported as its first frame; the animation isn't carried into the single WebP still.

Which browsers can export WebP?

Chrome and Firefox encode WebP from canvas. Safari — including current versions — doesn't export WebP from canvas (it would silently fall back to PNG), so the tool checks the result and, if WebP isn't available, tells you to use a current Chrome/Firefox or our AVIF to PNG / AVIF to JPG instead.
