Do you upload my AVIF files?
Never. The AVIF decoder runs inside your browser as WebAssembly. Images stay on your device at all times.
What about animated AVIF files?
We export the first frame of an animated AVIF as a still JPG and tell you when that happens. To keep the animation, keep the original .avif file.
What about HDR, wide-gamut, or 10-bit AVIF files?
The AVIF decodes to plain 8-bit sRGB before the JPG re-encode, so HDR/wide-gamut/10-bit sources lose that range and can look less vivid — and JPG is lossy anyway. Keep the original .avif if fidelity matters.
Does the JPG output preserve transparency?
No — JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened onto a white background. If you need to keep transparency, use our dedicated AVIF to PNG tool instead.
Why did someone send me an .avif file?
Modern phones, websites and messengers increasingly save images as AVIF to save space. Older apps often can't read it — conversion solves that.
Does conversion lose quality?
JPG output uses high-quality compression (quality 90) — visually indistinguishable for typical photos. If you need every pixel preserved, convert to PNG with our AVIF to PNG tool.
What is AVIF and why is it used?
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and delivers 20–50% smaller files than JPG at the same quality. It's used by Netflix, YouTube, and Chrome for efficient image delivery on the web.
