Convert HEIC to JPEG XL
Want your iPhone HEIC photos as JPEG XL — for smaller files, true-lossless archiving, or a modern format you control? This tool decodes HEIC locally with a WebAssembly (libheif) decoder and encodes JPEG XL with libjxl, both compiled to WebAssembly, entirely in your browser. Photos are automatically straightened using their EXIF orientation before encoding. Default runs a quality pass (slider, 75%); switch Lossless on to keep every pixel for screenshots or graphics. Transparency carries over either way. Everything is local: no uploads, no server, no watermarks, no usage limits, offline-capable once the codecs load. For viewing, Safari has shown .jxl since version 17, Firefox enables it by default in version 157 (September 2026), and Chrome still has its decoder behind a flag — for the widest reach today, keep a JPG copy.

Frequently asked questions
Are my HEIC photos uploaded?
No. HEIC decoding (WebAssembly libheif) and JPEG XL encoding (libjxl WebAssembly) both run in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
Lossless or quality mode?
Quality gives smaller files at high fidelity for photos; Lossless preserves every pixel for screenshots and graphics. Either way transparency is kept and orientation is corrected automatically.
Will portrait photos be rotated correctly?
Yes. The HEIC's EXIF orientation is applied before encoding, so vertically-shot photos come out upright in the .jxl.
Can browsers open the .jxl output?
Safari shows .jxl since version 17 and Firefox enables it by default in version 157 (September 2026); Chrome has a decoder but not on by default yet. For apps and services that don't accept .jxl, keep a JPG copy.
