Convert JPEG XL to AVIF
Need AVIF from your JPEG XL files — for a site or pipeline that standardises on AVIF? This tool decodes .jxl with a libjxl WebAssembly decoder and encodes AVIF with the @jsquash AVIF encoder, both running in your browser tab. Being honest about the mechanics: AVIF encoding here is done by WebAssembly, not a native browser transcoder, and the result is lossy — this page offers only a quality slider and doesn't expose AVIF's lossless mode — so a bit of the source's fidelity is traded for wide AVIF compatibility. A quality slider (default 50%) lets you tune that trade-off, and transparency carries over. Everything is local: no uploads, no server, no watermarks, no usage limits, offline-capable once loaded. If you'd rather have the .jxl open in more places, use our JXL to JPG tool instead.

Frequently asked questions
Is the AVIF encoding done by the browser natively?
No. It runs via a WebAssembly AVIF encoder (@jsquash) inside your tab, so broad browser support doesn't depend on a native AVIF transcoder. Nothing is uploaded.
Will the output be lossless?
No — AVIF output here is lossy. If your .jxl was lossless, some detail is traded for AVIF compatibility. Raise quality toward 100% to minimise it, or keep the .jxl.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. AVIF supports alpha, so transparency in the .jxl carries through to the AVIF.
Are my files uploaded?
No. JPEG XL decoding and AVIF encoding both run as WebAssembly in your browser. Nothing leaves your device, and it works offline.
